The island of Santa María is an island of the archipelago of the Azores, officially the first discovered and also the first to be populated. It was discovered by Diogo de Silves on a return trip from Madeira in 1427.

The island has an area of 97.5 km² and a population of 6,500 inhabitants. The capital of the island, Vila do Porto, is the oldest of the villas of the Azores and you can still find vestiges of old houses that supposedly belonged to its first captain, with windows from the 15th century.

Santa María is the only island of the archipelago with large proportions of sedimentary land, where you can find marine fossils.
