Island of São Jorge, the Azores
São Jorge is an island of the central group of the Azores archipelago, Portugal, separated from the island of Pico by a strait of 15 km, the channel of São Jorge. The island is 53 km long and 8 km wide, its total area being 237.59 km² with a population of 10 500 inhabitants (2001). Politically it is divided into two municipalities: Velas and Calheta.
