In 2007 it had a population of 15,761 inhabitants, grouped into three localities: Madalena, Sāo Roque do Pico and Lajes do Pico. Access to the island is by plane - international or national - and in summer the best option is by boat.
In 2004, 987 hectares of the northwestern part of the island's coastline were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, with the name of Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture.
