Pico Island is an Atlantic island of Portugal in the archipelago of the Azores, very close to the island of Faial, which with 444.8 km² is the second largest of the archipelago after São Miguel Island. It is an elongated island in which the volcano that gives it its name stands out, Pico volcano, which at 2351 meters is the highest peak of the Portuguese Republic.
In 2007 it had a population of 15,761 inhabitants, grouped into three localities: Madalena, Sāo Roque do Pico and Lajes do Pico. Access to the island is by plane - international or national - and in summer the best option is by boat.
In 2004, 987 hectares of the northwestern part of the island's coastline were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, with the name of Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture.
