Graciosa Island belongs to the central group of the archipelago of the Azores, Portugal. It has an area of 60.84 km² and a population of 5500 inhabitants. It measures 10 km long and 7 km wide.

According to some authors, it was discovered on May 2, 1450, its first resident being Vasco Gil Sodré, a native of Montemor-o-Velho who arrived with his family from Terceira Island.

The island is of volcanic origin, with a very pronounced relief in the southern part where the peak of Caldeira (402 m) is located. On the rugged coastline, two bays open to the port of Vila da Praia and Santa Cruz da Graciosa (with 4780 inhabitants according to the 2001 census).
