Yunnan is one of the twenty-two provinces that, together with the five autonomous regions, four municipalities and two special administrative regions, make up the People's Republic of China. Located in the extreme southwest of the country, it extends for approximately 394,000 square kilometers and has a population of 45.7 million (2009 data). The capital of the province is Kunming, previously also known as Yunnan-Fu. The province is bordered by the Chinese provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan and the Tibet Autonomous Region, and with the countries of Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.
