Tianjin is one of the four municipalities that, together with the twenty-two provinces, five autonomous regions and two special administrative regions, make up the People's Republic of China. It is located in North China on the banks of the Hai River at its mouth in the Bohai Sea. It is the fourth most populous city in China after Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, with about 15 469 500 inhabitants, and occupies an area of 170 km².
