Located in the Eastern China region, it borders Shandong to the north, Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the east, Jiangxi to the south and Hubei and Henan to the west. It is crossed by the Huai and Yangtze rivers. It occupies an area of 139,000 km². Its population in 2013 was more than 60 million inhabitants, mostly ethnic Han. The southern part of the province is mountainous thanks to the Huang mountains.
