Pollution and smog across Central China
Dense, white fog fills a heart-shaped region in the Sichuan Basin of Central China. The lighter colored haze that permeates the scene is caused largely by carbon particles released into the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants, industry and home heating. Numerous fires, marked in red, could also be contributing to the haze. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( MODIS ) on NASAs Aqua satellite captured this image on December 23, 2003.
