The Greater Buenos Aires (GBA) is the generic denomination that refers to the Argentine megacity that includes the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and its conurbation over the Province of Buenos Aires, without constituting an administrative unit as a whole. This occurs in all possible directions (north, west and south, to the east is limited by the Rio de la Plata). This conurbano or metropolitan area is informally divided into: North Zone of Greater Buenos Aires, West Zone of Greater Buenos Aires and South Zone of Greater Buenos Aires.

The Greater Buenos Aires is integrated by two jurisdictions of first order or "self-governed states", of the 24 that conform the Argentine Republic, and they are: all the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) and a region of the Province of Buenos Aires, the part closest to the CABA. The expression "Greater Buenos Aires" has different scopes in current use, including in some cases the CABA. The Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (INDEC) distinguishes the "Greater Buenos Aires" from the "Greater Buenos Aires Aglomerate". The "Greater Buenos Aires", according to the official definition, includes the City of Buenos Aires and 24 nearby partidos or districts. The "Aglomerado Gran Buenos Aires" encompasses the entire urban area, with a border that moves with time and does not respect the administrative boundaries, covering the entire City of Buenos Aires, the surface of 14 close partidos and the partial of another 18 partidos. This last expression coincides with what is also called "Metropolitan Area Buenos Aires" (AMBA).

The area of Greater Buenos Aires (GBA) varies depending on whether the area is limited to urban sprawl or also covers rural areas, and whether the insular sector of the Paraná Delta is included or excluded. In its maximum extension, the surface is of 13,934 km2 (40 municipalities of the Province of Buenos Aires + the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
