Map of the Greater San Miguel de Tucumán
Map of the Greater San Miguel de Tucumán, Province of Tucumán, Argentina.
The Greater San Miguel de Tucumán is the urban agglomeration formed around the city of San Miguel de Tucumán, capital of the province of Tucumán, Argentina. According to the 2010 census it had a population of 794,325 inhabitants and an area of 114 km2.
The high population growth of the original city caused it to go beyond the limits of its department and occupy land located in the four neighboring departments (Cruz Alta, Yerba Buena, Tafí Viejo and Lules), creating new urban centers or absorbing existing ones.
Although they are not part of the agglomerate proper, in several urban statistics the nearby cities of Tafí Viejo, Villa Carmela and Lules are registered with it. The Teniente Benjamín Matienzo International Airport, which serves as an aerial connection to the agglomerate, is located a few kilometers east of it. For this reason, the neighborhoods that border this, along with the communes of Delfín Gallo, Colombres and La Florida, are also usually included within the metropolitan area of Tucumán.
According to the last census, the Greater San Miguel de Tucumán has 794,327 inhabitants (INDEC, 2010), being then the 5th urban agglomerate of Argentina in population after having surpassed the Greater La Plata area in the 1990s. It is also the agglomerate most populated of all the Argentine northwest.
