Map of San Miguel de Tucumán, Province of Tucumán, Argentina.

San Miguel de Tucumán is the capital of the province of Tucumán, located in the northwest of the Argentine Republic, 1311 km from the city of Buenos Aires. It is known as "The Garden of the Republic" and is the sixth largest city in Argentina, after Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Rosario, La Plata, and Mar del Plata, as well as being the most important in the northern region. Its growth has made it exceed its original limits, making it to occupy territories of the surrounding departments in all directions, thus giving rise to the conurbation of the Greater San Miguel de Tucumán, which is located, according to the 2010 census, as the fifth largest metropolitan area in the country. Its historical importance is due, mainly, to the fact that it was in this city that the Declaration of Independence of Argentina was declared on July 9, 1816. It is located very close to the right bank of the Salí River, also called the Dulce River.
