It constitutes an important urban center with the city of Pilar. The partido limits with the partidos de Campana, Escobar, Exaltación de la Cruz, General Rodríguez, Luján, Malvinas Argentinas, Moreno and José C. Paz. It is part of the urban agglomerate known as Greater Buenos Aires, located in the north of it.
The majorities of the population centers of the Pilar arose thanks to the arrival of the railroad, nowadays some have transformed into cities, others still have a profile of rural town. The Partido has around 300,000 stable inhabitants, and doubles on weekends and in summer due to the number of families that own weekend homes in the partido.
