Viedma is the capital city of the province of Río Negro, located in the northeast sector of the Argentine Patagonia. It is also the head of the Adolfo Alsina department. It is located to the east of the province, on the right margin of the final stretch of the Negro River, in front of the Buenos Aires city of Carmen de Patagones, with which it is conurbated, being called "La Comarca Viedma-Patagones", and within the zone productive known as the lower valley of the Negro River.
The final results of the 2010 census showed that the city has 52,789 inhabitants. With this, Viedma is the 9th largest city in Patagonia Argentina, the fourth largest in its province, the most populated in the Lower Negro River valley.
The city of Viedma forms a unique conurbation together with the town of Carmen de Patagones, called by INDEC Viedma - Carmen de Patagones; between both, in 2010 they had 73 322 inhabitants.
