From a political-administrative point of view, Belgium is a federal state divided into three federal regions:

  • The Walloon Region (in French: “Région Wallonne” and in German: “Wallonische Region”)
  • The Flemish Region (in Dutch: “Vlaams Gewest”)
  • And the Brussels Region (in French: “Région Bruxelloise” and in Dutch: “Brussels Gewest”)
With the exception of the latter, the other regions are divided into provinces, which add up to a total of ten (five Walloons and as many Flemish). In the past there were nine provinces, Brabant, which does not exist today, included a part of each region, and completely absorbed the Brussels Region, but after a constitutional reform, the provinces became dependent on the regions and then it was necessary to distribute Brabant in two new provinces (Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant). From then on Brussels enjoys a particular statute, according to which, without being subject to provincial division, it retains some elements typical of the provinces (in particular, a governor and a vice-governor).
