Physical map of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina
Physical map of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur, spanish for "Land of Fire, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands").
The fuegian sector of the province is formed by the eastern part of the large island of Tierra del Fuego (Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego) and the Staten Island. Tierra del Fuego is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Magellan, which makes the two oceans communicate, and which, before the construction of the Panama Canal, was, with the passage of Drake, the only passages between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Many navigators, at the time of the great discoveries, tried to cross them, facing their furious waters, but few succeeded without damage. In this archipelago, discovered by Magellan in 1520, is the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, on the north shore of the Beagle Channel.
Its coasts are bathed by the sea of Argentina, part of the South Atlantic Ocean. In the north of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, there are gentle morainic hills that are a testimony of Quaternary glaciation. The coasts are low and sandy, but they rise more and more towards the south. The southern part of the island is traversed from west to east by the Fuegian section of the Andes.
The sovereign region covers an area of 21,571 km². The region, including the disputed and claimed territories, covers a total area of 1,002,352 km², including the Argentine Antarctic and the islands in the South Atlantic.
