Braga, also known as the city of the archbishops is a historical and immemorial Portuguese city located in the north of the country, capital of the homonymous district. It is located in the North statistical region (NUTS II) and in the intermunicipal community of Cávado (NUTS III). It has 181,819 inhabitants (2011) and 800,000 in the metropolitan area (GAM do Minho / Braga). It is the third most populated city in Portugal, after Lisbon and Oporto. In 2012, Braga was the European Capital of Youth, the largest event in Europe dedicated to young people, the Este and Cávado rivers traverse the city. The municipality of Braga borders on the north with Amares, on the east with Póvoa de Lanhoso, on the south with Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão, and on the west with Barcelos and Vila Verde.
