Porto is the second most populated city in Portugal, after Lisbon. It had 297,555 inhabitants in the year 2011. They form the central nucleus of the city of Oporto, the subregion of Greater Porto, and more broadly the Metropolitan Area of Porto, which forms its metropolitan area of 2 959 045 inhabitants. It is located in the north of the country, on the right bank of the Duero at its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean. It is headquarters of the homonymous district, in the North Region of Portugal.

The municipality of Porto has 15 freguesias (equivalent to parishes or neighborhoods). It limits to the north with Matosinhos and Maia, to the east with Gondomar, to the south with the river Duero and Vila Nova de Gaia, and to the west with the Atlantic.
