The Caribbean Map
The Caribbean is a region of the globe corresponding to the watershed of the Caribbean Sea. It is sometimes called the "New World Mediterranean". Strictly speaking, the Caribbean is a subset of the American continent. By misuse of language, the Caribbean is often confused with the West Indies.
In everyday language, the Caribbean is often confused with the West Indies, including the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles, but the Caribbean cultural and economic space extends beyond the Caribbean arc. It includes the Lucayan Archipelago (Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands), as well as the Caribbean facade of the American continent which extends from Central America to the Guiana Shield through the coastal plains of Colombia and Venezuela. More rarely are Bermuda, Florida, sometimes even Louisiana associated with the Caribbean.
Another broader definition encompasses the Gulf of Mexico, the sections of the Atlantic Ocean that include the Bahamas and the territorial waters of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
