Central America is the geographic region within the American continent between North America and South America. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean (Caribbean Sea). Politically it is divided into seven independent countries: Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama From the historical-cultural point of view, some historians delimit the region comprised by the former territories of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, that is, the current republics of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the state of Chiapas in Mexico. From a geographical point of view, the region includes the territories located between the basin of the Atrato River and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Its territorial extension is of 522 760 km ² and its population is of 44 671 601 inhabitants approximately.
