The Caucasus Map
Caucasus. Territory located in the southeast of the European continent, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, between Europe and Asia. In its southern side there are three countries that regained their independence in 1991 after the disintegration of the Soviet Union: Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The northern slope belongs to Russia. Map 2008.
The Caucasus region can be reasonably divided into 2 subregions:
South Caucasus or Transcaucasia on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, where three independent states coexist: Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. This sub-region is usually included within the Near East.
North Caucasus or Ciscaucasia on the north slope, which belongs to the Russian Federation and is divided into seven autonomous republics: Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, Adygea and Dagestan. This sub-region is usually included within Eastern Europe.
