Corrientes is a city in Argentina, capital and main social and economic center of the homonymous province. Founded on April 3, 1588, it is the oldest city in the Northeast of Argentina. It is located on the banks of a bend of the Paraná River, 50 km downstream from the confluence with the Paraguay River, approximately 1150 km upstream from its mouth in the Río de la Plata. Together with the neighboring towns it forms the urban conglomerate Gran Corrientes.
The public administration is its main activity, also standing out as a university center and for its health centers. The Manuel Belgrano General Bridge that crosses the Paraná River, communicates it with the neighboring cities of Barranqueras and Resistencia in the province of Chaco, where thousands of people daily pass through work and studies.
National Route 12 is its main road communication, and also has a port and an airport.
The municipality of Corrientes includes the islands: Pelón, Talar, Meza, Hernández, Noguera, Platero, Cabral, Palomera, Latorre, and Pindó.
It has a population of 346,334 according to the 2010 Census.
