Map of the Autonomous communities of Spain.

An autonomous community is a Spanish administrative territorial entity that, within the state constitutional legal order, is endowed with certain legislative autonomy with its own representatives and certain executive and administrative powers.

The structure of Spain in autonomous communities is included in the Spanish Constitution of 1978. Article 2 "recognizes and guarantees the right to autonomy of the nationalities and regions" that make up the Spanish Nation. The text of the Constitution generically establishes the "competences" that can be assumed by the autonomous communities and those that correspond exclusively to the State. However, the detailed regional map of Spain is the result of the autonomic pacts of 1981 and 1992, which were agreed upon by the two main political parties and were not even approved by the Cortes Generales.
