The municipality of Manaus is the largest tourist destination in the Amazon and was the 8th most visited Brazilian destination by foreigners in 2013. There are a significant number of jungle hotels in its metropolitan region, which also function as tourist attractions. One of the main tourist attractions is the Teatro Amazonas, an architectural and cultural landmark dating from 1896 - the golden age of rubber - and National Historic Heritage.

The region of Manaus was awarded the prize for the best green destination in Latin America, granted in a vote made for the world tourism market during the World Travel Market, held in London in 2009. In 2010, in a survey made among visitors, tourism was evaluated as satisfactory by 92.4% of the national tourists and 94% among the foreign tourists.

Throughout the year, Manaus receives large numbers of cruise ships as there is access to transatlantic via the Amazon River. Cruise visits to the city occur seasonally, usually between October and April of each year. On average, Manaus receives 23 ships per season. Europeans are the ones who visit the city the most by cruise ships, especially the Germans. Americans also account for a significant portion of cruise ship tourists. Ecotourism, also called nature tourism, is notably explored. Among the natural attractions of the city are: The Meeting of Waters (Portuguese: Encontro das Águas), a natural phenomenon caused by the encounter of the muddy waters of the Solimões River with the dark waters of the Negro River, which run about six kilometers without mixing. This phenomenon happens due to the temperature and density of the water, and also the speed of its current; Praia da Ponta Negra, a river beach on the banks of the Negro River, located 13 km from the Center. It presents itself in better conditions during the ebb of the river in the month of September; Praia da Lua, located on the left bank of the Negro River, 23 kilometers away from Manaus by river. It has the shape of a crescent moon and a vegetation of rare natural beauty with a stretch of white sand and bathed by the black limpid waters of the Rio Negro; Praia do Tupé, located 23 kilometers from the city, surrounded by the Rio Negro; Praia Dourada, in the rural area of Manaus, 20 km away from the city center, being bathed by the Tarumã Açu River and the Negro river; and the Cachoeira De Paricatuba, located on the right bank of the Rio Negro, in a small tributary. The cachoeira is formed by sedimentary rocks and surrounded by abundant vegetation and the access is made by waterway.
