Spain Political Map.

Spain, officially the Kingdom of Spain, is a country in the southwest of Europe with 48,958,159 (2017) inhabitants and an area of 505,992 km². The country covers roughly 80% of the Iberian Peninsula. Apart from that, the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and the Spanish exclaves in North Africa belong to the country.

Spain is a nation organized territorially in seventeen autonomous communities and two autonomous cities. Title VIII of the Constitution establishes the territorial organization of the State in municipalities, provinces and autonomous communities, these with powers to manage their own interests with a broad level of autonomy, legislative, budgetary, administrative and executive powers.

Each autonomous community is formed by one or several provinces, making a total of fifty fifty provinces and two autonomous cities.

The Autonomous Communities of Spain are:

  • Andalusia
  • Aragon
  • Asturias
  • Balearic Islands
  • Basque Country
  • Canary Islands
  • Cantabria
  • Castile and León
  • Castilla-La Mancha
  • Catalonia
  • Extremadura
  • Galicia
  • La Rioja
  • Madrid
  • Murcia
  • Navarre
  • Valencian Community

The 2 Autonomous Cities of Spain are: Ceuta and Melilla, located in North Africa. Although administratively they have superior competence to that of a municipality, they do not have their own legislative chambers, so their competence is inferior to an Autonomous Community.

Spain is administratively divided into fifty provinces, which in turn are divided into municipalities.
