The Iniciativa para la Integración de la Infraestructura Regional Suramericana
(IIRSA) is probably the most ambitious infrastructure investment in the continent that has ever existed.
It is a proposal for integration and development launched by the governments of the region in Brasilia in 2000.
The initiative proposes the construction of 10 axes of major infrastructure works including mega-highways,
dams, pipelines and waterways across the length and breadth of South America. Map 2006.
