South America is a continent in the southern hemisphere, south of North America and north of Antarctica. It is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, which delimits the East and West extremes, respectively, while the Caribbean Sea delimits the extreme south and the Antarctic Ocean to the north. It occupies an area of 18.2 million km², which represents 42.9% of the American continent and 13.0% of the land area, and is inhabited by 6.5% of the world population.

It is made up of a group of 13 political entities: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. Brazil concentrates approximately half of the population and the economic production of the region.
