Sea surface temperature in the Caribbean
Warm waters fuel hurricanes. This image depicts an average of actual sea surface temperatures (SSTs) for the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, from August 25 to August 27, 2005, as measured by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite. Areas in yellow, orange or red represent ocean temperatures of 82 degrees Fahrenheit or above, which are warm enough to strengthen hurricanes.
