Pacific Ocean Map 2008
The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth. It occupies a third of its surface and extends approximately 15 000 km from the Bering Sea bordering the Arctic on the north, to the frozen margins of the Ross Sea and bordering on the south with Antarctica. It reaches its widest (on the order of 19 800 km) at approximately 5 degrees north latitude, extending from Indonesia to the coast of Colombia. It is understood that the western boundary of the ocean is in the Strait of Malacca.
The Pacific contains approximately 25,000 islands (more than all other oceans in the world combined), almost all of which are located south of the equator. It covers an area of 155 557 000 km². The lowest point on the surface of the Earth's crust, the Marian pit, is found in the Pacific.
