The highest mountain in the Caucasus region is Mount Elbrus, 5,642 m altitude, although there are also three other peaks that exceed 5,000 m altitude, the Dykh-Tau (5,203 m), the Shkhara (5,068 m) and the Kazbek (5,047 m), and several others mountains that exceed 4,000. The watershed along the Greater Caucasus range is generally perceived to be the dividing line between Europe and Southwest Asia.
While the central Caucasus area is covered by numerous glaciers, the western Caucasus is dominated by the presence of abundant forests, while the eastern Caucasus, located at a lower altitude and drier, is an almost desert region. These contrasts are however less visible between the north and south slopes of the mountain range.
