São Miguel is the largest island of the archipelago of the Azores and also the most populated. The capital of the region (Ponta Delgada)is located on the island. With an area of 746.82 km², it measures 65 km from east to west and its width varies between 8 and 16 km. It has a population of approximately 129,434 inhabitants (2001 data), divided between the municipalities of Lagoa, Nordeste, Ponta Delgada, Povoação, Ribeira Grande and Vila Franca do Campo.

São Miguel is also known as Isla Verde, due to its large meadows. In the hills there are also laurel forests. The island is the refuge of the Azores bullfinch, endemic bird in serious danger of extinction.
