This pair of true- and false-color images from MODIS on May 28, 2002, shows the handful of large wildfires burning in central Alaska. Smoke from the fires is drifting southwest and being hemmed in against the Alaska Range Mountains. The city of Fairbanks is located between and to the south of the two large clusters of fires northeast of center. At upper right is the Yukon River, and at upper left is the Brooks Range. The false-color image shows the large burned areas consumed by the fires. Vegetation is green, ice (both snow on the ground and ice particles in clouds) is blue, and the burned areas are reddish-brown.
