Northern Italy
A few fires were detected across Italy (center) on July 20, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite and are marked with red dots. The snow-covered Alps arc across the northern part of the country, while the southern part of the country stretches into the Mediterranean Sea. At bottom center, a large, smoky fire is burning in central Corsica.
