A land of forests and rivers, western Brazil is home to some of the last undisturbed stretches of rainforest in the world. This Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from June 20, 2002, shows the Amazonas region of Brazil, with the Amazon River flowing in from the top left edge of the image and going out of the scene at top center edge. The large clear water river flowing into the Amazon from the north is the Negro River, at at their junction is the city of Manaus. The large, muddy-looking river flowing into the Amazon from the south is the Tapajos River. The smaller, more sinuous river to its west is the Madeira River.
