Scores of fires were detected burning in Bolivia by the Terra MODIS instrument on October 24, 2002. Many of the fires, which are marked in red, have visible smoke plumes—thin wisps of gray streaking away from a red dot. Almost all of the fires are concentrated in Bolivia’s forests, and are likely due to slash-and-burn agriculture. The mountain range marching south is the Andes, and the lakes in Bolivia’s western portion are Lago Titicaca and Lago de Poopó. Just visible at the western edge of the image are Peru and Chile, with a bit of Paraguay showing at the bottom eastern corner. The image from November 7 is centered farther north, with Lake Titcaca at bottom, left of center. At left is Peru, and at top is Brazil.
