The Mid-Atlantic States
The last day of 2003 was completely cloudless for the mid-Atlantic states of the United States, giving the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( MODIS ) on NASAs Aqua satellite a remarkably clear view of the region. Only a light dusting of snow covers the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. In the south, red dots mark the locations of a few fires that were burning on December 31 in Georgia.
