Southeastern United States
In early May the southeastern United States is covered with rich green vegetation. A few fires, represented by red dots, are burning. They are probably agricultural fires, set to clear land for farming. In the top center of the image, a series of wavy green lines show the lower stretches of the Appalachian Mountains. The Mississippi River cuts across the top left corner of the image. The states shown along the top of the image, from left to right, are Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia. Immediately below them, starting on the left, are Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The southernmost row of states includes Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, with Florida in the far south. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( MODIS ) on NASAs Terra satellite acquired this image on May 7, 2004.
