Quatre-vingt-seize d\u00e9partements sont en France m\u00e9tropolitaine et cinq sont des d\u00e9partements d&#8217;outre-mer, qui sont \u00e9galement class\u00e9s comme r\u00e9gions d&#8217;outre-mer. Les d\u00e9partements sont en outre subdivis\u00e9s en 332 arrondissements, et ceux-ci sont divis\u00e9s en cantons. De 1800 \u00e0 avril 2015, ceux-ci \u00e9taient appel\u00e9s conseils g\u00e9n\u00e9raux. Chaque conseil a un pr\u00e9sident. Leurs principaux domaines de responsabilit\u00e9 comprennent la gestion d&#8217;un certain nombre d&#8217;allocations sociales et de pr\u00e9voyance, des b\u00e2timents et du personnel technique des coll\u00e8ges, des voiries locales et des bus scolaires et ruraux, ainsi qu&#8217;une contribution aux infrastructures municipales. La division de la France en d\u00e9partements \u00e9tait un projet particuli\u00e8rement identifi\u00e9 au leader r\u00e9volutionnaire fran\u00e7ais l&#8217;abb\u00e9 Siey\u00e8s, bien qu&#8217;il ait d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 fr\u00e9quemment discut\u00e9 et \u00e9crit par de nombreux hommes politiques et penseurs. La premi\u00e8re suggestion connue \u00e0 ce sujet date de 1665 dans les \u00e9crits de d&#8217;Argenson. Ils ont inspir\u00e9 des divisions similaires dans de nombreux pays, dont certains \u00e9taient d&#8217;anciennes colonies fran\u00e7aises. Le num\u00e9ro est utilis\u00e9, par exemple, dans le code postal et \u00e9tait jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 r\u00e9cemment utilis\u00e9 pour toutes les plaques d&#8217;immatriculation des v\u00e9hicules. Les habitants utilisent couramment les chiffres pour d\u00e9signer leur propre d\u00e9partement ou un d\u00e9partement voisin, par exemple, les habitants du Loiret peuvent d\u00e9signer leur d\u00e9partement par \u00able 45\u00bb. Les d\u00e9partements plus \u00e9loign\u00e9s sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement d\u00e9sign\u00e9s par leur nom, car peu de gens connaissent les num\u00e9ros de tous les d\u00e9partements.<\/p>\n<p>En 2014, le pr\u00e9sident Fran\u00e7ois Hollande a propos\u00e9 de supprimer d&#8217;ici 2020 les conseils d\u00e9partementaux, qui auraient maintenu les d\u00e9partements en divisions administratives, et de transf\u00e9rer leurs pouvoirs \u00e0 d&#8217;autres niveaux de gouvernance.
