Elle occupe la partie nord de la Belgique et couvre une superficie de 13.625 km\u00b2 (44,4% de la Belgique). En raison de la fusion imm\u00e9diate des institutions r\u00e9gionales et communautaires flamandes (qui, en R\u00e9gion wallonne et la Communaut\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise n&#8217;est pas le cas), il n&#8217;y a en pratique ni d\u00e9partements s\u00e9par\u00e9s, ni conseils administratifs, ni sous-gouvernement pour la R\u00e9gion flamande. Les comp\u00e9tences de la r\u00e9gion sont d\u00e9finies dans la Constitution belge et la loi sp\u00e9ciale sur la r\u00e9forme des institutions.
