Les habitations et les activit\u00e9s sont ensuite \u00e9tendues dans la ville basse, notamment dans les faubourgs de Saint-Laurent et de Saint-Fran\u00e7ois. Jusqu&#8217;au d\u00e9but du xixe, la ville de Lausanne \u00e9tait encore contenue dans l&#8217;actuel quartier du Centre. Le reste de la commune est alors constitu\u00e9 de campagnes et de domaines viticoles.<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;Office d&#8217;\u00e9tudes socio-\u00e9conomiques et statistiques de la ville de Lausanne d\u00e9coupa la ville en 81 secteurs regroup\u00e9s en 17 quartiers. Ce d\u00e9coupage se base sur de nombreux crit\u00e8res : topographie, voirie, type de b\u00e2ti et morphologie sociale et \u00e9conomique. Il prend en compte les barri\u00e8res physiques et g\u00e9ographiques les plus nettes comme les cours d&#8217;eau (Vuach\u00e8re, Louve), les voies de chemin de fer, la vall\u00e9e du Flon, les bois de Rov\u00e9r\u00e9az ou de Sauvabelin, les rives du lac L\u00e9man, le cimeti\u00e8re de Montoie, le stade de la Pontaise, l&#8217;a\u00e9rodrome de la Bl\u00e9cherette, la prison du Bois-Mermet, le palais de Beaulieu, les h\u00f4pitaux, etc. La d\u00e9limitation du centre-ville ob\u00e9it \u00e0 des crit\u00e8res tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis, bas\u00e9s sur la densit\u00e9 d&#8217;emplois (sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 la densit\u00e9 d&#8217;habitants et sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 100 par hectare) et leurs type (pourcentage d&#8217;emplois dans le secteur tertiaire, dans les services aux entreprises comme les banques ou les assurances, dans l&#8217;administration publique et dans le commerce de d\u00e9tail).
