Avec une population d&#8217;environ 144 000 habitants (en 2020), Berne est la cinqui\u00e8me ville la plus peupl\u00e9e de Suisse. L&#8217;agglom\u00e9ration bernoise, qui comprend 36 communes, comptait 406 900 habitants en 2014. La r\u00e9gion m\u00e9tropolitaine comptait 660 000 habitants en 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Berne est \u00e9galement la capitale du canton de Berne, le deuxi\u00e8me canton le plus peupl\u00e9 de Suisse. La langue officielle est l&#8217;allemand, mais la principale langue parl\u00e9e est la variante locale du dialecte al\u00e9manique suisse allemand, l&#8217;allemand bernois. En 1983, la vieille ville historique (en allemand : Altstadt) au centre de Berne est devenue un site du patrimoine mondial de l&#8217;UNESCO. Berne est devenue une ville imp\u00e9riale libre en 1218 et, en 1353, elle a rejoint la Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration suisse, devenant l&#8217;un de ses huit premiers cantons. Depuis lors, Berne est devenue une grande cit\u00e9-\u00c9tat et un acteur de premier plan de l&#8217;histoire suisse en poursuivant une politique d&#8217;expansion territoriale souveraine. Depuis le XV<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, la ville se reconstruit progressivement et acquiert ses caract\u00e9ristiques actuelles. Berne est devenue la ville f\u00e9d\u00e9rale en 1848.
