C\u0153ur de la province de La Havane, La Havane est le principal port et centre commercial du pays. C&#8217;est la ville la plus peupl\u00e9e, la plus grande par sa superficie et la deuxi\u00e8me plus grande zone m\u00e9tropolitaine de la r\u00e9gion des Cara\u00efbes. Elle a servi de tremplin \u00e0 la conqu\u00eate espagnole des Am\u00e9riques, devenant un point d&#8217;arr\u00eat pour les galions espagnols revenant en Espagne. Le roi Philippe III d&#8217;Espagne a accord\u00e9 \u00e0 La Havane le titre de capitale en 1607. Des murs et des forts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 construits pour prot\u00e9ger la ville. La ville est le si\u00e8ge du gouvernement cubain et de divers minist\u00e8res, ainsi que le si\u00e8ge d&#8217;entreprises et de plus de 100 bureaux diplomatiques. En 2009, la ville\/province avait le troisi\u00e8me revenu le plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 du pays.<\/p>\n<p>La Havane contemporaine peut \u00eatre d\u00e9crite comme trois villes en une : la Vieille Havane, le Vedado et les nouveaux quartiers de banlieue. La ville s&#8217;\u00e9tend principalement vers l&#8217;ouest et le sud \u00e0 partir de la baie, \u00e0 laquelle on acc\u00e8de par une crique \u00e9troite et qui se divise en trois ports principaux : Marimelena, Guanabacoa et Antares. La rivi\u00e8re Almendares traverse la ville du sud au nord, entrant dans le d\u00e9troit de Floride \u00e0 quelques kilom\u00e8tres \u00e0 l&#8217;ouest de la baie.<\/p>\n<p>La ville attire plus d&#8217;un million de touristes chaque ann\u00e9e (1 176 627 touristes internationaux en 2010, soit une augmentation de 20 % par rapport \u00e0 2005). La Vieille Havane a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9clar\u00e9e site du patrimoine mondial de l&#8217;UNESCO en 1982. La ville est \u00e9galement connue pour son histoire, sa culture, son architecture et ses monuments.
