Il traverse le point le plus \u00e9troit de l&#8217;isthme de Panama et constitue un canal de communication pour le commerce maritime entre les oc\u00e9ans Atlantique et Pacifique. Des \u00e9cluses \u00e0 chaque extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 permettent de faire monter les bateaux jusqu&#8217;au lac Gatun, un lac artificiel d&#8217;eau douce situ\u00e9 \u00e0 26 m\u00e8tres au-dessus du niveau de la mer, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par la construction de barrages sur la rivi\u00e8re Chagres et le lac Alajuela afin de r\u00e9duire la quantit\u00e9 de travaux d&#8217;excavation n\u00e9cessaires au canal. Les \u00e9cluses permettent ensuite de descendre les bateaux \u00e0 l&#8217;autre extr\u00e9mit\u00e9. En moyenne, 200 ml d&#8217;eau douce sont utilis\u00e9s lors d&#8217;un seul passage d&#8217;un navire. La France a commenc\u00e9 les travaux du canal en 1881, mais les a interrompus en 1889 en raison du manque de confiance des investisseurs d\u00fb aux probl\u00e8mes d&#8217;ing\u00e9nierie et au taux de mortalit\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9 des ouvriers. Les \u00c9tats-Unis ont repris le projet en 1904 et ont ouvert le canal en 1914.<\/p>\n<p>Les \u00c9tats-Unis ont continu\u00e9 \u00e0 contr\u00f4ler le canal et la zone environnante du canal de Panama jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 ce que les trait\u00e9s Torrijos-Carter pr\u00e9voient sa cession au Panama en 1977. Apr\u00e8s une p\u00e9riode de contr\u00f4le conjoint am\u00e9ricano-panam\u00e9en, le gouvernement panam\u00e9en a pris le contr\u00f4le en 1999. Une troisi\u00e8me voie d&#8217;\u00e9cluses, plus large, a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite entre septembre 2007 et mai 2016. La voie navigable \u00e9largie a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00eatre exploit\u00e9e commercialement le 26 juin 2016. Les nouvelles \u00e9cluses permettent le passage de navires Neopanamax plus grands.<\/p>\n<p>Le trafic annuel est pass\u00e9 d&#8217;environ 1 000 navires en 1914, lorsque le canal a \u00e9t\u00e9 ouvert, \u00e0 14 702 navires en 2008, pour un total de 333,7 millions de tonnes du canal de Panama\/Syst\u00e8me de mesure universel (PC\/UMS). En 2012, plus de 815 000 navires avaient emprunt\u00e9 le canal.<\/p>\n<p>Cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, les \u00c9tats-Unis, la Chine, le Chili, le Japon et la Cor\u00e9e du Sud \u00e9taient les cinq principaux utilisateurs du canal. En 2017, les navires mettaient en moyenne 11,38 heures pour passer entre les deux \u00e9cluses ext\u00e9rieures du canal.
