Ravenstein \u00e9tait un g\u00e9ographe britannique et membre de la <em>Royal Geographical Society<\/em>. Il est surtout connu pour son ouvrage pionnier intitul\u00e9 <em>Laws of Migration<\/em> (Les lois de la migration), publi\u00e9 en 1885, qui a servi de base th\u00e9orique \u00e0 de nombreux travaux scientifiques ult\u00e9rieurs sur la migration. Cette carte montre le d\u00e9sert du Sahara, de l&#8217;actuel Mali oriental \u00e0 l&#8217;oc\u00e9an Atlantique. En rouge, les traces des grands explorateurs du XIX<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle qui ont travers\u00e9 le d\u00e9sert, notamment le Fran\u00e7ais Ren\u00e9-Auguste Calli\u00e9 (1799-1838), qui est devenu en 1827-28 le premier Europ\u00e9en \u00e0 visiter Tombouctou et \u00e0 en revenir, et l&#8217;Allemand Gerhard Rohlfs (1831-1896), qui est devenu en 1864-67 le premier Europ\u00e9en connu \u00e0 traverser l&#8217;Afrique par voie terrestre de la mer M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e au golfe de Guin\u00e9e.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Carte du Sahara occidental par Ernest George Ravenstein (1834-1913) publi\u00e9e dans le London Geographical Magazine en 1876.
