La ville est la capitale religieuse et administrative du Tibet depuis le milieu du XVII<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle. Elle contient de nombreux sites bouddhistes tib\u00e9tains d&#8217;importance culturelle tels que le palais du Potala, le temple de Jokhang et les palais Norbulingka.<\/p>\n<p>Situ\u00e9e sur le plateau du Tibet, au fond d&#8217;une vall\u00e9e entour\u00e9e de montagnes, son altitude de 3 650 m en fait l&#8217;une des villes les plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es au monde. Les montagnes entourant la ville s&#8217;\u00e9l\u00e8vent \u00e0 5 000 m. La ville est long\u00e9e par la rivi\u00e8re Kyi, qui traverse les montagnes Nyainqentanglha, et coule sur 315 km avant de se jeter dans le Brahmapoutre64.
