Abritant 609 489 habitants, la ville repr\u00e9sente un tiers de la population totale de la Lettonie. La population de la zone m\u00e9tropolitaine de Riga, qui s&#8217;\u00e9tend au-del\u00e0 des limites de la ville, est estim\u00e9e \u00e0 860 142 habitants (en 2023). La ville est situ\u00e9e sur le golfe de Riga, \u00e0 l&#8217;embouchure de la rivi\u00e8re Daugava, \u00e0 l&#8217;endroit o\u00f9 elle rencontre la mer Baltique. Riga \u00e9tait la capitale europ\u00e9enne de la culture en 2014, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d&#8217;Ume\u00e5 en Su\u00e8de. Riga a accueilli le sommet de l&#8217;OTAN en 2006, le concours Eurovision de la chanson 2003, le championnat du monde de curling f\u00e9minin 2013 et les championnats du monde de hockey sur glace masculin de l&#8217;IIHF en 2006, 2021 et 2023. Elle abrite l\u2019Organe des r\u00e9gulateurs europ\u00e9ens des communications \u00e9lectroniques (ORECE) de l&#8217;Union europ\u00e9enne. En 2017, elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sign\u00e9e R\u00e9gion europ\u00e9enne de la gastronomie.<\/p>\n<p>En 2019, Riga a accueilli plus de 1,4 million de visiteurs \u00e9trangers. La ville est desservie par l&#8217;a\u00e9roport international de Riga, l&#8217;a\u00e9roport le plus grand et le plus fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 des \u00c9tats baltes.
