C&#8217;est la plus grande ville du Tessin et de la Suisse m\u00e9ridionale italophone. Lugano a une population (en d\u00e9cembre 2020) de 62 315 habitants et une agglom\u00e9ration urbaine de plus de 150 000 habitants. Il s&#8217;agit de la plus grande ville de langue italienne en dehors de l&#8217;Italie.<\/p>\n<p>La ville s&#8217;\u00e9tend sur la plus grande largeur du lac de Lugano et occupe, avec la ville adjacente de Paradiso, toute la baie de Lugano. Le territoire de la commune englobe une r\u00e9gion beaucoup plus vaste de part et d&#8217;autre du lac, avec de nombreux villages isol\u00e9s. La r\u00e9gion de Lugano est entour\u00e9e par les Pr\u00e9alpes de Lugano, ces derni\u00e8res s&#8217;\u00e9tendant sur la majeure partie de la r\u00e9gion du Sottoceneri, la partie la plus m\u00e9ridionale du Tessin et de la Suisse. En 1803, la commune politique de Lugano est cr\u00e9\u00e9e, suite \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation du canton.<\/p>\n<p>Depuis 1882, Lugano est une \u00e9tape importante du chemin de fer international du Saint-Gothard. Le rail a apport\u00e9 une contribution d\u00e9cisive au d\u00e9veloppement du tourisme et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement du secteur tertiaire qui sont, aujourd&#8217;hui encore, pr\u00e9dominants dans l&#8217;\u00e9conomie de la ville.<\/p>\n<p><strong>G\u00e9ographie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Selon l&#8217;Office f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de la statistique, la superficie de Lugano est de 75,98 km\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>La ville est situ\u00e9e sur la rive nord du lac de Lugano (aussi appel\u00e9 Lago Ceresio), entre le lac Majeur et le lac de C\u00f4me.
