La province est au Burundi la division administrative de 1er<\/sup> niveau. En 2016, on en d\u00e9nombre dix-huit. Chacune d’entre elles comprend des communes qui elles-m\u00eames comprennent des collines.<\/p>\n

Les provinces du Burundi ont \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9es le jour de No\u00ebl 1959 par un d\u00e9cret colonial belge. Elles ont remplac\u00e9 le syst\u00e8me pr\u00e9existant des chefs.<\/p>\n

En 2000, la province englobant Bujumbura a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9par\u00e9e en deux provinces, Bujumbura Rural et Bujumbura Mairie. La province la plus r\u00e9cente, Rumonge, a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e le 26 mars 2015 \u00e0 partir de portions de Bujumbura Rural et de Bururi.<\/p>\n

En juillet 2022, le gouvernement du Burundi a annonc\u00e9 une refonte compl\u00e8te des subdivisions territoriales du pays. Le changement propos\u00e9 r\u00e9duirait le nombre de provinces de 18 \u00e0 5. Le changement n\u00e9cessite l’approbation du parlement du Burundi pour prendre effet.<\/p>\n
