La m\u00e9dina abrite environ 113 000 habitants et est domin\u00e9e par la Grande Mosqu\u00e9e de Sfax.<\/p>\n<p>Le 12 f\u00e9vrier 2012, le gouvernement tunisien a d\u00e9pos\u00e9 une demande pour l&#8217;inscrire sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l&#8217;UNESCO. Elle est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme l&#8217;une des rares cit\u00e9s m\u00e9di\u00e9vales d&#8217;Afrique du Nord \u00e0 conserver sa trame d&#8217;origine m\u00eame avec toutes les modifications de ses \u00e9difices au fil des d\u00e9cennies. Elle repr\u00e9sente aussi le meilleur exemple d&#8217;urbanisme arabo-musulman le plus conserv\u00e9 de tout le bassin m\u00e9diterran\u00e9en.
