Une ville peut avoir le statut municipal de municipalit\u00e9 \u00e0 palier unique ou de palier inf\u00e9rieur. Avant 2003, l&#8217;Ontario avait des seuils de population minimum de 15 000 et 25 000 pour le statut de ville. Les seuils minimaux de population ne sont plus n\u00e9cessaires pour qu&#8217;une municipalit\u00e9 puisse se faire conna\u00eetre en tant que ville.<\/p>\n<p>En vertu de l&#8217;ancienne Loi de 1990 sur les municipalit\u00e9s, une ville \u00e9tait \u00e0 la fois une municipalit\u00e9 urbaine et une municipalit\u00e9 locale. En vertu de cette loi, la Commission des affaires municipales de l&#8217;Ontario (CAMO) pouvait changer le statut d&#8217;un village, \u00e0 sa demande, en ville s&#8217;il avait une population de 15 000 habitants ou plus. La CAMO pouvait \u00e9galement incorporer un canton en tant que ville dans les m\u00eames conditions, \u00e0 l&#8217;exception que les besoins en population \u00e9taient de 25 000 habitants ou plus. Dans les deux cas, s&#8217;ils sont situ\u00e9s dans un comt\u00e9, l&#8217;autorisation du ministre des Affaires municipales \u00e9tait \u00e9galement requise.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de la transition vers la Loi de 2001 sur les municipalit\u00e9s, les statuts municipaux conventionnels et leurs seuils de population associ\u00e9s ont \u00e9t\u00e9 abandonn\u00e9s. Au 31 d\u00e9cembre 2002, chaque ville qui :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00abexistait et faisait partie d&#8217;un comt\u00e9, d&#8217;une municipalit\u00e9 r\u00e9gionale ou de district ou du comt\u00e9 d&#8217;Oxford \u00e0 des fins municipales\u00bb est devenue une municipalit\u00e9 de palier inf\u00e9rieur tout en conservant son nom de ville; et<\/li>\n<li>\u00abexistait et ne faisait pas partie d&#8217;un comt\u00e9, d&#8217;une municipalit\u00e9 r\u00e9gionale ou de district ou du comt\u00e9 d&#8217;Oxford \u00e0 des fins municipales\u00bb est devenue une municipalit\u00e9 \u00e0 palier unique tout en conservant son nom de ville.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>La l\u00e9gislation actuelle donne \u00e9galement aux municipalit\u00e9s de palier inf\u00e9rieur et \u00e0 palier unique le pouvoir de se nommer elles-m\u00eames en tant que \u00abcit\u00e9s\u00bb, ou d&#8217;autres types d&#8217;anciens statuts municipaux conventionnels tels que \u00abvilles\u00bb, \u00abvillages\u00bb ou
