Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e le 1er janvier 1982. Son chef-lieu est Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. Son territoire s\u2019\u00e9tend sur une longueur moyenne d&#8217;environ 40\u00a0km parall\u00e8lement au fleuve Saint-Laurent et sur une profondeur d&#8217;environ 50\u00a0km sur l&#8217;axe perpendiculaire \u00e0 ce dernier. Elle est bord\u00e9e au Sud-Est par l\u2019\u00c9tat am\u00e9ricain du Maine qui, dans cette partie de son territoire, est pratiquement inhabit\u00e9. \u00c0 la hauteur de la MRC de L&#8217;Islet, le fleuve Saint-Laurent varie de 20 \u00e0 25\u00a0km de largeur. Quelques \u00eelots rocheux, d&#8217;une superficie restreinte, font partie de la MRC de L&#8217;Islet. Ces \u00eeles sont \u00e0 une distance variant de 5 \u00e0 11\u00a0km de la rive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c9conomie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>En 1996, 11,3\u00a0% de la population active travaillent dans le secteur primaire, plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment 8,2\u00a0% en agriculture et 3,1\u00a0% en exploitation foresti\u00e8re. Pour le secteur secondaire, la majorit\u00e9 des emplois \u00e9taient dans l\u2019industrie manufacturi\u00e8re, soit 32,4\u00a0% de la population active. Ce taux est tr\u00e8s largement sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 la moyenne provinciale.
